| Factoid: The ATT Satellite and the British Rock Invasion |
|
Launched July 10, 1962, Telstar was the first satellite to relay a transatlantic television broadcast. Five weeks after launch, Joe Meek's song Telstar, played by The Tornados, was released and soon became the first British number-one single in America (before The Beatles hit the charts in 1963). Telstar, the satellite, ushered a new era in communications. Telstar, the song inspired by the satellite, ushered the British rock invasion. Telstar was the first hit composed for the electronic keyboard. The Tornados used a Univox synthesizer, designed in 1946. The celebrated Moog synthesizer did not make its debut until the 1964 Audio Engineering Society convention. Here's how Universal Newsreels covered Telstar in the news. |
